Springtime Flower Pot

Hello crafters!!

Vicky here from Cut That Design!

For today’s blog I’m back with a fun springtime make.

In this post I’ll show you how I transformed this terracotta pot in to a lovely springtime flower pot using acrylic paint and a beautiful sunflower design from the Silhouette Design Store.

Items you will need:
Silhouette Self-Adhesive Glossy Vinyl
White Acrylic Paint
Paintbrush & Tray
MOD Podge (Or Other Sealant For The Paint)

Apply The Paint

I applied two coats of the acrylic paint to the pot and left it to dry overnight once the second layer was applied.

Wait for the first layer to dry for a few hours before applying the second layer.

Whilst you wait for that to dry you can prepare your vinyl decals.

Be A Sunflower

I chose the design I wanted to put on to my pot from the Silhouette Design Store.

I then downloaded and opened it in Silhouette Studio.

I measured the pot and adjusted the size of the design in Studio.

Ungroup & Offset

As I knew this was going to be a quite an intricate cut for the text, I ungrouped the design and grouped the text together, then I applied a slight offset of 0.005.

I then deleted the original text, so I was only left with the offset text.

Let's Get Cutting

I then prepared my design for cutting.

For my own guidance I changed the colour of the text to the same as the inner circle and grouped them together.

I also grouped the sunflower leaves together, as this will make it easier when switching the designs over when cutting.

The cut settings I used for this project are:

Material: Vinyl – Glossy
Ratchet blade
Blade: 2
Force: 10
Speed: 5

Once I was happy with my settings, I sent the design to cut. Remembering to change my vinyl each time.

Weed Design & Apply Transfer Tape

Once my designs had been cut, I weeded out the excess vinyl from the design.

I then applied transfer tape to the quote and center section of the design, I then placed this next to the ‘flower’ section of the design, I used a squeegee to aid the vinyl in adhering to the transfer tape better.

The decal is now ready to be applied to the pot once it’s dry.

Apply The Design To The Pot

Once the post was fully dry, I removed the vinyl from the backing with the transfer tape (and squeegee where required).

As I’m applying the vinyl to a curved surface, I cut a few slits into the transfer tape around the design to aid in applying it a little easier.

Once the design was one, I used my squeegee I applied a small amount of pressure to adhere the decal to the pot. I then removed the transfer tape from the pot.

Seal The Paint

For this next step I applied some Mod Podge to seal the paint and left it to dry.

So, here with have the final design. Overall, I think it turned out great. Me and my son love planting sunflowers in the spring and watching to see how tall they will grow.

This pot is for indoor use and will be used for when we first plant the seeds and wait for the first seedlings to sprout.

As I am writing this it’s not quite time to plant the seeds just yet, but I’m looking forward to when it is!

Thank you for reading my blog post and I hope it’s given you some inspiration for your own Springtime creations with your Silhouette machine.

Until next time!
